Ethics in Action
Jeffrey Sachs develops arguments on the causes of migration, human trafficking, and modern slavery. Sachs discusses what drives people to leave their native countries and what makes them susceptible to exploitation in the video. The video also examines how migrants are taken advantage of by traffickers and smugglers, as well as how contemporary slavery is a problem in many nations. The scope of human trafficking, the populations most in danger, and the measures governments and organizations are trying to address the problem are all covered in the film (SDG Academy, 2020). Finally, Sachs looks at how the problem should be approached while considering ethical considerations.
The ethical principle of autonomy covers the issues addressed in the video. Allowing people to make their own decisions free from intervention or pressure is autonomy (Varkey, 2020). autonomy applies to individuals who must leave their homes due to hostilities, violence, or natural disasters. People should be free to choose where they wish to live and not feel forced to leave their homes out of necessity. Furthermore, refugees should be free to make decisions without being constrained by rules or outside forces that they believe are best for them and their families. Regarding the risks of human trafficking and modern slavery, people also have the right to make their own decisions and should be free to do so.
I feel a lot of compassion for those who have to leave their homes because of conflict, violence, or natural disasters. I can only fathom how desperate and heartbreaking it feels to decide to leave your house because of an uncontrollable circumstance. Additionally, I find it horrifying that those who need a better life become victims of human trafficking and modern slavery. I think everyone should have the right to exercise their judgment. People should be treated with respect, and their right to self-determination shouldn't be violated. We should work to build a society where people may make decisions about their lives freely and without being coerced.
