Is it Ethical to Use a Fake Name or ID on a Website?

People tend to use fake names on internet or when signing up on website all the time to protect their anonymity. However, it is not ethical to create a fake profile, which misleads others or leaving a malicious comment on the websites, which might harm or hurt others. There are various types of terms used to describe these faking actions such as catfishing, which is creating a fake online account and develop relationship with users that are unsuspected and troll, which is online users who post negative comments to incite others.

Well, it is technically legal to use fake names on websites, but due to high misuse of fake profile, the law enforcements have raised concerns. Some social media apps such as Facebook requires an individual to use their real name but others such as Twitter have no policy on using fake names but it has a verification process, which helps identify a celebrity or public figure official account. Well, most of twitter fake accounts are harmless but others tend to create fake account with an intention of harming others and can be consider as ethics violation.

Question 1)Is it ever acceptable to use a fake name online? Why or why not?

Using a fake name online, is technically accepted because some people always want to be anonymous even though it does not make it illegal. But it is not worth using a fake name online, because it can get one arrested, thus it is not acceptable. It is important to use your real name, when creating an account.

Question 2)Is it unethical to create fake personas for others to use? Why or why not?

It is unethical to create a fake persona for other individuals to use because the credential of the original individual are misused. In addition, it is also misleading.

Question 3)Should websites require you to use a real name, or have a verification process? Why or why not?

It is important for website to require individual to use their real name and also include a verification process to reduce the raise of fake online names and other unethical activities such as trolls and catfishing. In addition, having real name policies important for security purpose and reduction of hate spreading and hatred incitement.
