Module 1: Introduction to Graduate Studies

ETH501 Business Ethics

*** Significance of the Course within the Program

The program outcomes are listed in Trident’s catalog at https://www.trident.edu/catalog/ .

This course will either implicitly or explicitly address the following learning outcomes:

1. Build a solid foundation of the common body of knowledge in the discipline.

2. Communicate proficiently with others in the field through scholarly writing and skilled knowledgeable oral and written presentation to general and specialized audiences.

3. Logically think through an issue using quantitative reasoning and quantitative and qualitative data, to employ and apply mathematical and/or statistical tools to address problems in the field.

4. Develop and apply information literacy skills.

5. Develop critical thinking skills that will result in the ability of the student to solve problems in their diverse workplaces and fields of study.

6. Serve and lead in a diverse world.

7. Function with integrity and make ethical decisions in their workplaces and fields of study.

This course will introduce you not only to the topic of ethics in business, but also to key information such as the required format for graduate-level papers, use of APA Style for the referencing and citation of sources, and use of the Trident Online Library.

Everything that you will study in this class will be needed in the rest of your graduate program. For this reason, it is strongly suggested that you take this course as the first course your graduate degree. As the foundation for your graduate studies, ETH501 will introduce you to the scholarly skills that are critical for your success.

******* Course Overview

For today's leaders, responding to the needs of the internal organization while negotiating the opportunities and risks coming from the external environment is no small (or easy) task. That the activities of organizations are under fairly continuous public scrutiny by their many stakeholders renders the task of an organization's leadership all the more challenging. At the same time, there are incentives other than public scrutiny: Organizations do derive benefits when they act ethically.

In this course, we will explore three very common ethics theories, namely: virtue ethics, utility ethics, and duty ethics. We will use these three philosophical concepts to complete a critical assessment of a selected organization’s ethics, including its duties to others, and the rights of others. We will also consider how Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR, is related to ethics in business.

*******Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to satisfy the following outcomes:

· Module 1

· Locate several sources in the Trident Online Library, determine their scholarly nature, and cite sources in text and as end references.

· Learn how to properly format graduate-level papers.

· Module 2

· Apply virtue ethics to a session long organizational case study.

· Apply critical thinking and argumentative writing to analyze an ethical dilemma.

· Module 3

· Apply utility ethics to real-world business situations.

· Analyze and assess corporate social responsibility of a given organization.

· Module 4

· Define duty ethics, and apply duty ethics to real-world business situations.

*****Originality

Trident University provides students with the online support tool Turnitin to help them ensure that their academic work is of the highest integrity and that they are the sole authors of their work.

Turnitin is linked directly to the assignment dropboxes in this course. Once a student submits an assignment to the dropbox, Turnitin automatically generates a value called the Similarity Score. Within a minute, a percentage and colored square will be displayed under the Turnitin Similarity heading to the right of the submitted paper link. Click on the colored square to see the Originality Report, which shows the sources that correspond to text within your paper.

Each submission receiving a Turnitin Similarity score of 15% or higher will be reviewed by the instructor to distinguish between correctly documented research and possible academic dishonesty. Your instructor will contact you regarding your score and any special instructions, if necessary. Please send any concerns or questions directly to your instructor.

Case Assignments

The Case Assignment is a written description of a problem or situation. Most cases are a “snapshot” of a particular situation within a complex environment.

The purpose of the Case Assignments in this course is to place the student in a position that will require research, synthesis of information, and critical thought. The student will be asked to distinguish pertinent facts from peripheral facts, identify central alternatives among several issues competing for attention, and formulate strategies and recommendations. This method provides an opportunity to sharpen problem-solving skills and to improve the ability to think and reason rigorously.

Session Long Project

The Session Long Project consists of an integrative project emphasizing the personalized application of each module's concepts. In each module, students are required to engage in an original integrative project reflecting their comprehensive knowledge of and ability to apply the course materials. Each component of the SLP will be graded on a modular basis.

ASSIGNMENT 1 (MOD 1) CASE ASSIGNMENT

Module 1 - Case

Introduction to Graduate Studies

Assignment Overview

This class will aid in building a foundation for ethical business behavior that can be applied in many settings. Our first Case Assignment lets you flex critical thinking and debate skills.

In the workplace, employees must often support a professional point of view that may be contrary to personal beliefs. This assignment challenges students to understand “both sides of the fence” on hot-button issues and to consider all points of view. Both sides of the argument should be equally powerful so that the reader is unaware of the position that you espouse.

Case Assignment

Select one of the topics:

· Gun control

· Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

· Human rights

· Genetically modified organisms

· Animal ethics

· Capital punishment

· Euthanasia

Using articles exclusively from Trident Library’s full-text databases like (Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete and/or ProQuest Central), research the chosen topic and create a well-balanced 2-page submission that addresses two opposing viewpoints. Do not use any quotations.

Assignment Expectations

Since you are engaging in research, be sure to cite and reference the sources in APA format. The paper should be written in third person; this means words like “I”, “we,” and “you” are not appropriate. For more information, see Differences Between First and Third Person .

Use the attached APA-formatted template ETH501 Case1 to create your submission.

Your submission will include:

· Trident University International’s cover page

· A two-page paper with APA citations (2- to 3-sentence introduction, body, 2- to 3-sentence conclusion)

· The reference list page in APA format

Grading Note:

At Trident University International, rubrics are used for grading. These rubrics specify the points available for each component of an assignment. Points are earned based on the level of the work submitted. The rubric located in the Case Dropbox is used for this Case Assignment.

ASSIGNMENT 2 (MOD 1) SLP

Introduction to Graduate Studies

Know How to Effectively Research

Assignment Overview

This module is a hands-on exercise to master research in Trident’s Online Library (accessed at the top left of the TLC Portal home page), and on the Internet. You will also learn how to create a research paper using APA format, citation, and referencing.

Review required readings for Module 1 before starting this assignment. Published materials will provide guidance on referencing, formatting, and using the Trident Online Library.

SLP Assignment: Internet Privacy

The subject of Internet privacy is broad and controversial and is the epitome of modern-day debate. The assignment requires research and attribution and cannot be based on opinion or personal experience.

Here are some subject areas that you can research:

· Social media posts that lead to an employee being fired

· Companies secretly collecting and selling information about your online behaviors

· Using social media to identify protesters

· Censorship in the United States or overseas

· Minors using social media

· Crowdsourcing to identify suspects of a crime

· Loss of privacy when using free Wi-Fi

· Employers requiring job applicants and employees to turn over passwords to private social media accounts

Alternative topic ideas must be approved by your instructor by the end of Week 1. This allows enough time to complete the assignment by deadline.

The finished assignment will be 1 page long. The reason this is a 1-page paper is to ensure that you spend time and energy learning to research different types of sources, and have a finished product that reflects your voice that is properly formatted using APA. No quotations are permitted in this submission.

Goal: Provide an overview of the aspect of “Internet Privacy” you have selected.

Research Requirements: You must use all four types of resources below:

· The following book: Business Ethics: A Stakeholder and Issues Management Approach by Joseph Weiss, published in 2014, available in the EBSCO eBook Collection in the Trident Online Library.

· A scholarly journal article from Business Source Complete (EBSCO). (See module resources to identify this type of source.)

· A periodical article from ProQuest Central.

· A resource found through an internet search.

Analysis: In the Appendix of the paper, you will provide feedback on the resources you used.

· Weiss book: Explain how you found the book in Trident’s library. Assess the ease of use of the ebook.

· Business Source Complete (EBSCO): How did you know that the article was scholarly? What attributes told you this?

· ProQuest Central: How was this type of article different from the scholarly one? Explain the process you used with regard to search terms.

· Internet Source: How did you determine that the Web resource was appropriate for a graduate-level paper? Was the author or source legitimate? Explain.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Effective academic and research writing requires a third-person voice. This SLP will be written in the third  person. Do not use any quotations. For more information see Differences Between First and Third Person . Since you are engaging in research, be sure to cite and reference the sources in APA format. Note: the Analysis in the Appendix may be written in the first person.

Use the attached APA-formatted template ( ETH501 SLP1 ) to create your submission.

Your submission will include:

· Trident University International’s cover page

· A 1-page paper with APA citations (one-sentence introduction, body, one-sentence conclusion)

· The reference list in APA format

· Appendix explaining how research was done and how sources were chosen

Grading Note:

At Trident University International, rubrics are used for grading. These rubrics specify the points available for each component of an assignment. Points are earned based on the level of the work submitted. The rubric located in the SLP Dropbox is used for this SLP.
