Students will write a paper about an ethical dilemma in counseling. Students must choose one (1) case study from a list of five (5) case studies that describe an ethical dilemma and complete a proper format outlined below. (You may utilize the questions below to help brainstorm if you get stuck.) The goal of this paper is to be able to take your case study, find the ethical dilemma, identify the ethical codes that have been violated, and present an alternative approach to the situation.

Your paper must be written at a college level and your writing ability is part of your grade. Excessive grammatical and spelling errors will result in reduced points or rejection of the paper entirely.

Formatting

· APA Format (Include headers, title page, and reference page)

· Your paper should include the following Headers:

I. Identifying the Ethical Dilemma

· What information do you know about your client and the situation?

· As the Counselor, what are your own biases, assumptions, hypotheses, or suspicions?

· Is this an ethical, legal, professional, or clinical problem? How do you know?

· Is this issue related to the Counselor, the client, and/or other individual’s in the client’s life?

· How does this impact Kitchener’s Principle Ethics? (Autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and fidelity).

II. Applying the ACA Code of Ethics (2014)

· Which section(s) does this dilemma fall under? (Reference any applicable sections).

· Is this situation resolved solely by utilizing the ACA Code of Ethics (2014)?

III. Determine the Nature or Origins of the Ethical Dilemma

· What literature can be applied to assist in understanding the nature or origins of this dilemma?

· What professionals do you need to consult with to fully handle this ethical dilemma?

· How can you apply the foundational principles of autonomy, non-maleficence, fidelity, beneficence, justice, and veracity to shed light on this dilemma?

IV. Discover a Course of Action

· As the Counselor, what courses of action do you see that could help resolve this dilemma?

· How do these courses of action apply to the ACA Code of Ethics discussed prior?

V. Considerations & Potential Consequences

· What do you need to consider when assessing this dilemma?

· What consequences could occur if you perform this plan of action?

· Could your plan of action potential harm yourself, the client, or a third party?

VI. Evaluating the Selected Course of Action

· How can you utilize justice, publicity, and university to test your selected course of action?

· Make sure your chosen course of action does not produce new ethical issues or you will need to reevaluate your course of action.

VII. Implementation of Action Plan

· What is your final plan?

· What resources do you need in order to implement this?

· What struggles can you anticipate in implementing this action plan?

· What benefits can you anticipate in implementing this action plan?

· Properly conclude your thoughts and tie the paper together!

· Times New Roman, 12pt font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins

· Minimum of 2 scholarly or peer-reviewed resources other than your textbook

· 4-5 pages in length (title page and reference page not included in your page count)

Grading Rubric

100 Points Total
25 points	Accurately determining codes in the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) impacted by the ethical dilemma. You must have at least one (1) code identified in order to gain these points. (e.g. C.7.c. Harmful Practices) You must also include at least one of Kitchener’s Principle Ethics that has been impacted by this ethical dilemma. (e.g. Autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and fidelity.)
25 points	Demonstrate a clear understanding of the Ethical Decision Making Model by formatting your paper with the above instructions.
25 points	Follow APA format (Times New Roman, 12pt font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, title page & reference page (with 2 references in addition to your textbook).
25 points	Using the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) and the Ethical Decision Making Model to develop a clear course of action on how to properly handle the ethical dilemma you have chosen.
