The differences between mandatory and aspirational ethics
Mandatory ethics are rules and standards that are set that helps an individual function at a level of ethical reasoning that helps within their job setting to the basic standards. This is the minimum standards that all should have.
Aspirational ethics help an individual to look at their personal behavior and what is the motivation that has the individual going beyond the basic level of code. It looks at the high standards that are great codes of ethics.
What are the differences between principle and virtue ethics?
Principle ethics is the basic motion that looks at the general principles of one’s actions. It is the part that forms the moral part of ethics and is based on a person’s character traits.
Virtue ethics are consistent and integral however they do not have a real guide to one’s actions. Virtue ethics is the consequences of one’s actions in a situation. It is the habit one must practice things like honesty and generosity that guides an individual with no rules in resolving an ethical problem.
What type or types of ethics are represented in your profession?
Within counseling I would say that all ethics are important, as they are in any situation. Though I am not in a profession currently, the profession that I am looking into is that of counseling. “By nature of the profession, counsellors are to act in the best interest of their client, promoting client goals, protecting client rights, maximizing good and minimizing harm (Stein, 1990)”. It is to inherent power between the clients and the counsellors. The principles and ethical codes give balance to that and ensure that the best interest for clients is put in place over that of the counsellors themselves. In counselling the idea of ethics is moral consideration, that alone is then considered what is moral or ethical. Every counselor has their own set of standards along with values, and with this each one has a way of determining the problems of their clients and can all be different
