Ethical Dilemma Project --Topic Selection
Directions : Fill in the blanks.
1. The ethical dilemma I selected from the list of topics is __________________________.
2. Define the term you selected:___________________________________________
Write one paragraph that defines the term you selected from the “ethics” list of topics. If possible, use a specialized dictionary or ethics dictionary rather than a generic online dictionary, such as dictionary.com. The DeVry Library (library.devry.edu), for example, has these specialized dictionaries available in its databases:
· The Blackwell Encyclopedic Dictionary of Business Ethics
· Dictionary of Ethical and Legal Terms and Issues: The Essential Guide for Mental Health Professionals
Here is a sample of the definition with an in-text citation of the source:
According to The Blackwell Encyclopedic Dictionary of Business Ethics, insider trading is “the practice of buying or selling securities with reliance upon information that is not available to the public” (Salbu, 1998, p. 333). Insider trading can be illegal or legal depending on when the person makes the trade of a publicly traded company’s stock and when the information is non-public (Ganti, 2019, para. 1).
Importance of the Topic
Read about the topic you selected so that you understand how serious the issue is and why it is an important ethical issue in the workplace. Summarize in a few paragraphs what you’ve learned about the topic and explain its importance. Here’s an example of the topic about sabotage:
Although employees would not admit it, workplace sabotage is a common and costly problem for American businesses. Sabotage can be subtle or blatant. It can be disguised as ignorance or incompetence. A programmer might leave out a piece of code, which causes a delay. A necessary condition of sabotage is intent, but that intent can be difficult to prove. For example, if someone leaves a hose on all night long so that the warehouse is flooded, and $15,000 in products is damaged, how does the employer know the act was intentional and not accidental? Is anyone going to admit, “Yeah, I left that hose on because I hate the place or I’m mad at my boss.”
The word “sabotage,” from the French, literally means to jam machinery by throwing in a wooden shoe (Harper, 2019). It was a form of protest against working conditions, a way to make employers stop and listen. When it comes to technology in the workplace, the wooden shoe has become vast computer networks that are jammed and destroyed.
In 2016, Verizon reported that its network had “suffered 57 incidents of vandalism in seven states in two weeks when 36,000 workers went on strike” (Brodkin, 2016, para. 1). The “incidents of sabotage” mostly involved the severing of fiber optic cables or damage to the terminal boxes. This sabotage, presumably by Verizon employees, disrupted critical wireline services to thousands of Verizon customers, and, as a result, some customers lost the ability to make 911 calls (Brodkin, 2016).
More recently, in 2018, Tesla CEO Elon Musk reported that one of his employees, who was angry that he had not received a promotion, engaged in sabotage by changing the code of the company’s manufacturing operating system (Matousek, 2018). The Tesla employee also sent “highly sensitive” company data to outside parties as part of his sabotage.
