History Research paper

· Carefully review the prompt for Essay #1

· Write an essay in which you make a clear argument, answering all the questions in the prompt

· "How did the federal government’s role change in this period?  What, do you think, brought these changes about?"

· Be sure to analyze the entire time period covered by the prompt (WWI-era, 1920s, 1930s)

 

· Use clear paragraph organization - introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion

· State your main argument in a clear thesis statement in your introduction

· Use topic sentences to state the sub-argument of each body paragraph

· Include specific evidence from the sources in your analysis

· In your conclusion, bring your main arguments together, state their larger historical significance, and connect them to the broader themes of the course—in short, answer the "so what" question

 

· Descriptive title at the top of the first page which reflects your main argument

· Not “Essay #1”

 

· No outside research is permitted for this assignment, so no works cited page will be necessary. When citing from the course materials, please use parenthetical citations with author name and page number—e.g., (Tuttle 18)

· When citing from the Coursepack, you only need to list "CP" and the document number—e.g., (CP #25)

· If citing from one of the online articles listed in the learning module, please list the title of the article—e.g., ("In 1932, Depression Was Campaign Centerpiece")

 

· Conventions

· 5-6 pages, double-spaced

· Minimum of 5 full pages

· 1.25” left and right margins

· 1" for top and bottom margins

· Times New Roman, 12-point font

 

· Check for spelling and grammar

· Use past tense when discussing historical events

· Avoid passive voice when possible
