Essay Two Reflective Journal on Native Americans and Nature.html
Instructions for Essay #2
In this two-page, double-spaced reflective journal, we will approach a reflective analysis that covers two of the major course goals to:
3. Complete a practical social-ethical project in the field as participant observers, in which project they develop the ability to apply general knowledge to an understanding of specific actions in the world, and, conversely, the ability to abstract from the specifics of action in the world to the theoretical.
4. Improve their writing skills
Once again, students will “transfer” and “reflect” upon their experience in this essay.
Vividly describe a brand new experience of nature and then evaluate it based upon insights gained from assigned Native American readings. Participant observation is the practice of learning from a culture through taking part in its activities and making conclusions about the culture based upon that experience. Your assignment is to partake in popular US culture or US subcultures by utilizing two-spirit Indigenous teachings to structure and analyze your future nature experiences. In 2019, consciously experience and observe the natural world around you with insights you've gained from Native American teachings in mind. In a page, relate the nature experience in vivid detailed writing full of senses, similes or metaphors. In the spirit of Maya scholar Daniel’s invitation to “open the senses,” and in resistance to the colonial Great Chain of Being that marked earth as ignorant or evil, only relate the experience sensory details on page one; do not evaluate or analyze the experience until the second page. On the second page, compare and contrast your experience of nature with a quote from any one American Indian nature writings from class, e.g. compare and contrast what you found with what the writing suggests about nature. Compare in one paragraph and contrast in the next on page two. For example, Carol laFavor suggests that people are cells of Mother Earth. How was your experience similar and different? Please keep the following in mind as you construct your essay:
- Organization: The first page is a descriptive, non-evaluative account of your experience while the second is a scholarly analysis of that experience. You’ll need a topic sentences for the two paragraphs on the second page only. Do not "introduce" your story on page one; dive right into it from the first vivid sentence.
- Content: emphasize five senses, metaphors, and similes on page one. Compare and contrast your cultural identity and experience with that offered in a class reading on page two. Be sure to refer to specific details of you page one story on page two as you.
- Citations: You must use at least one “short quote” with page references (p.1, 2, etc.) from Driskill et al. or another native class text on page two. For full credit, quote exact words. List the work cited in a bibliography on the page two. No cover sheet is necessary.
- Grammar and Style: Correct grammar, an evolved personal voice, lots of sensory details, and variety in sentence structure and subject will improve your overall writing style.
