Essay Exam #1
The phrase mission-driven has become the watch-word for organization development in the 21st century. The term is now ubiquitous, showing up in phrases like “mission-driven marketing”, “mission-driven culture”, and even “mission-driven goods”.
As you have read so far in the Learning Activities units of the course and in the assigned chapters in text book, the mission is the reason the organization or department exists. It is also the yard stick used to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization’s service delivery. When the organization aligns the mission, in a strategic way, throughout the organization it can also define the organization’s culture resulting in higher levels of employee engagement that keeps them invested in the good work of the organization as they attend to their every-day tasks (www.forbes.com)
Using your selected “client” organization/department as the example, state its Mission. If it does not clearly identify the < To do something; By providing something; and For an identified population > elements needed for the mission to be measurable, suggest how it can be improved.
Using the Systems model in the learning Activities of Week 1 and the material in your text book, identify the 3 desired outCOMES for the organization. Are they short-term or long-term?
How will you know if the organization is fulfilling its Mission?
What indicators or data can be collected to measure the outcomes?
The outPUTS of the organization are the services or programs it delivers, what are the outPUTS of your client organization/Department? Do they align with the mission? How does each directly or indirectly address the mission?
As a result of doing this exercise, is “mission fulfillment” a strength or a weakness for your client?
