The first paragraph (introduction) of the Leadership Philosophy Essay will include a thesis statement, as well as an outline of the overall paper. The student’s leadership philosophy should include military references throughout the paper such as Army Regulations (ARs), Army Doctrine Publications (ADPs), and Field Manuals (FMs) in order to demonstrate the student’s efforts to learn Army principles of leadership (HQDA, 2012). Throughout your paper, you need to apply the following APA format guidelines: set page margins to one inch on all sides, double-space all text, including headings, indent the first line of every paragraph 0.5 inches, use an accessible font (e.g., Times New Roman 12 pt., Arial 11pt., or Georgia 11pt.) and include a page number on every page.
Failure to properly cite resources will result in elimination from the leadership award. If a clear intent to plagiarize is discovered, the student will be reprimanded for unprofessional conduct and may be referred for UCMJ action. Authors deserve credit for their original ideas and quotations, as Jimi Hendrix famously stated, "I've been imitated so well I've heard people copy my mistakes" (Goodreads, 2015). Avoiding plagiarism is a good start, but each student's ultimate goal should be to achieve a high mark and win the leadership award.
A superior grade can be achieved by following the grading guidelines in the Leadership Philosophy Essay Rubric, which is located in the student welcome packets (possibly stapled to this essay). If a student takes the contest seriously, and stands out among their peers, then they will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the school Commandant and be recognized at graduation. The student must not have negative counseling statements throughout the course and have zero “no-go” evaluations or test failures. Lastly, don’t forget to have a reference page with at least two references that were used throughout the 1000-1500 word essay.
