“The American Dream” generates a hopeful belief that everyone in America can be successful if they put in their best effort. Although this general dream is just an illusion as depicted in the film “The Great Gatsby”. |
|
Thesis Statement (fill in the blanks on the right): |
As is evident in the film The Great Gatsby, Franklin’s assertion that the American Dream is available to all people is incorrect because people hold different views of success depending on their status and personal interests, Gatsby himself did not acquire his wealth through his hard work and even when he was wealthy, he still didn’t have everything he wanted.
|
Body Paragraphs: This is where you will develop each of the points in your thesis statement.
|
Body Paragraph 1: Elaborate on the first point in your thesis statement |
Topic Sentence: The way that people define success can be different for everyone.
Detail 1: The American dream can present a pretty rosy view of American society which can ignore many problems.
Detail 2: For someone who is less that wealthy, any financial gain or an increase in assets can seem like an interpretation of living the dream.
Detail 3: On the other hand, someone who was born into a wealthy family might also consider himself also living the American Dream.
Concluding Sentence: It’s all in the perception because although dreams are great, being realistic separates a dream from just a mere illusion.

|
Body Paragraph 2: Elaborate on the second point in your thesis statement |
Topic Sentence: The American Dream dictates the achievement of wealth is through an individual hard work and sweat that will eventually accumulate wealth to the favors of an individual.
Detail 1: This assertion is incorrect in the display of “The Great Gatsby” since we learn that Gatsby himself did not acquired his wealth through his hard work.
Detail 2: He achieved his wealth through bloodshed and crime under the tutelage of Cody while Dan Cody’s ex-wife got her wealth through the inheritance of Cody’s wealth.
Detail 3: Myrtle Wilson focuses her hard work in the affair with Tom as her way of seeking wealth despite being a working-class lady.
|
|
Body Paragraph 3: Elaborate on the third point in your thesis statement |
Topic Sentence: Money isn’t everything nor does it equal happiness.
Detail 1: Sometimes situations may not favor our hard work in the pursuit for our ‘dreams’.
Detail 2: Our hard work and sweat may end in vain since not dreams are achievable and if we do, we may end up leaving the fruits of our success.
Detail 3: This is evident in the film “The Great Gatsby” as Myrtle is killed as a result of her affairs with Tom while George kills Gatsby and eventually himself leaving the pursued wealth behind.
Concluding Sentence: In the end, through Gatsby one can see that just having money isn’t enough.
