Analyze  the  following  argument  on  abortion  by  following  the  argument  analysis  method   explained  in  the  argument  analysis  supplementary  material.  Follow  every  step  in  the   proper  order.    When  analyzing  the  argument,  avoid  personal  opinions,  cultural  beliefs,   religious  beliefs,  emotional  responses,  and  tradition.    The  argument  you  need  to  analyze  is   this:  

“Abortions  should  be  banned.    It’s  a  horrible  thing  to  do!  Abortions  are  extremely   dangerous  due  to  millions  of  women  dying  every  year  from  getting  them.  Plus,  poor   innocent  babies  are  killed  under  horrific  circumstances  when  a  woman  aborts.  Any   act  that  results  in  the  death  of  people  is  wrong.    Don’t  support  abortion.”  

In  order  to  do  this  assignment  properly,  you  must  do  the  following:   1. Write  an  introductory  paragraph.  

a. Introduce  the  topic  of  abortion.   i. Explain  why  the  topic  is  controversial.  

b. Introduce  the  abortion  argument.   i. Identify  its  position  on  abortion.   ii. Explain  you  will  be  analyzing  it.  

For  the  analysis  of  the  argument,  you  must  do  the  following:   1. Step  1:  Diagram  the  argument.  

a. Identify  the  conclusion  and  underline  it  twice.   b. Identify  the  premises  and  underline  those  once.   c. Cross  out  unnecessary  information.   d. Put  the  argument  in  standard  form.  

2. Step  2:  Identify  the  argument.   a. Is  the  argument  inductive  or  deductive?   b. Is  the  argument  a  moral  argument?  

i. Does  it  have  both  moral  and  non-­‐moral  premises?   1. Identify  whether  each  premise  is  moral  or  nonmoral.  

ii. Does  it  have  a  moral  conclusion?   1. Identify  whether  the  conclusion  is  moral  or  nonmoral.  

3. Step  3:  Summarize  the  argument  in  your  own  words.   a. Review  the  elements  of  a  good  summary.  

4. Step  4:  Analyze  the  information  presented  in  the  argument.   a. Check  for  fallacies.  

i. If  the  argument  is  a  fallacy,  do  the  following:   1. Identify  the  fallacy.   2. Explain  the  fallacy.   3. Explain  how  the  argument  is  that  type  of  fallacy.   4. Identify  the  argument’s  error  in  reasoning.  

ii. If  the  argument  is  not  a  fallacy,  please  state  that  the  argument  is  not   fallacious.  

b. Demonstrate  that  the  information  in  the  argument  is  either  TRUE  or  FALSE.     For  EACH  statement  in  the  argument,  you  must  do  the  following:  

i. Analyze  the  meaning  of  the  statement.   1. Careful  with  complex  statements.  These  will  require  extra  

steps  to  analyze.  See  chapter  3  lecture  notes.   ii. Conduct  research  using  reliable  sources.  

1. Try  really  hard  to  falsify  the  statement.   iii. If  the  statement  is  FALSE,  you  must  do  the  following:  

1. Explicitly  state  it  is  FALSE.   2. Demonstrate  this  by  providing  a  proper  counterexample.  

iv. If  the  statement  is  TRUE,  you  must  do  the  following:   1. Explicitly  state  it  is  TRUE.   2. Demonstrate  that  it  is  necessarily  TRUE.  

5. Step  5:  Evaluate  the  argument.   a. Are  you  convinced  by  the  argument?   b. Base  this  decision  solely  on  the  analysis  of  the  argument.  Do  NOT  base  this  

decision  on  personal  opinions,  cultural  beliefs,  religious  beliefs,  emotional   responses,  and  tradition.  

i. If  the  argument  has  all  true  statements  and  is  not  a  fallacy,  then  you   should  be  convinced.  

ii. If  the  argument  has  at  least  one  false  statement  and/or  is  a  fallacy,   then  you  should  not  be  convinced.
