1. After reading, “How it Feels to be Colored Me” by Zora Neal Hurston, “The Way to Rainy Mountain” by Scott Momaday, “Aria: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood” by Richard Rodriguez, and “ Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, think about what it is like to live within two or more cultures. Describe how growing up in one culture and then encountering and adapting to another culture in school and in the world of work affected at least two of the above authors. Then critically evaluate what you see as the advantages and disadvantages of being bicultural and/or bilingual. You may also use your own experiences and knowledge as examples. Optional compare to what it is like for an older person (Misses Dutta or Momaday’s grandmother.)

2. After reading the above articles, think about how one culture and/or language can survive when it encounters another culture. Then write an essay, using material from at least two of the above articles in which you critically examine the idea that within an individual, family or social group, a culture can survive or co-exist with another culture. What elements of a culture can be preserved within an individual when they are part of a larger society that emphasizes another culture and language? What elements of a culture can become lost? You may also use your own experiences and knowledge as examples.
