Formal Essay details: Your task is to play historian by writing a formal compare and contrast essay about how two people/cultures/political parties/historical developments changed the country. Try to focus on two or three areas when comparing and contrasting. Examples: Comparing and contrasting Thomas Jefferson’s Republicans and John Adams’s Federalists. Note both similarities and differences. Comparing and contrasting the North and South. Note both similarities and differences.

ESSAY STRUCTURE— Introduction – Begin with some generalizations, i.e. Ancient Roman and German cultures were very influential on the development of Western Civilization as a whole. The last line should be a thesis statement, i.e. Ancient Romans and Germans had very different ideas about marriage, slavery, and property rights, but despite these differences, there was also common ground.
