Essay Instructions

Objectives

This assignment combines university-level research with university-level argumentation and persuasion. By the end of this unit you will be able to:

 a persuasive research essay

 analyze the quality of a source, use sources to build your credibility

 analyze the logic of an argument, construct logical arguments

 write a research proposal

 give a research presentation

 properly format a research paper At its simplest, in this assignment, you will use elements of persuasion (effective writing, rhetoric, and audience-aware argumentation) that are supported by research (finding and vetting sources, evaluating information and claims professionally) to teach us something about a topic that interests you and to suggest a way forward that only this process of research and argumentation could have brought to life.

Your Essay Should Include the Following Parts:

 Introduction - Your intro should: o Provide necessary background on your topic o Establish stakes (why it matters) and bigger issues o Suggest a gap that your paper will fill o Lead us to your thesis: specific debatable claim.

Your introduction may be longer than one paragraph.

 Body: o Each body paragraph has a main point that you support with specific evidence. Each

piece of evidence supports the paragraph’s main point. Each main point relates back to and supports the thesis. That evidence must be cited appropriately and correctly.

o This is also where you acknowledge opposing points of view and dealing with them as necessary.

 Conclusion - Your conclusion should: o Recap your arguments and connect them to bigger or similar issues o Discuss the significance/relevance of your paper along with future directions and

implications of your research o Answer the question “who cares?”

 Works Cited/ References: The Works Cited or References page is not an annotated bibliography or research log – it should follow proper MLA or APA format. For this essay, you will need to include at least six credible sources (with an appropriate variety of source types).

Considerations

When approaching a persuasive essay, you need to… 1. Choose a specific structure for your argument. 2. Determine who your audience is to help you find the most effective way to convince that

audience. 3. Adequately inform your audience about the issue you are analyzing. 4. Make a specific claim with your thesis that clearly argues for a specific solution or set of

solutions to the problem you have identified. 5. Conduct research in order to support your claims, read/evaluate the material critically, and

provide sufficient evidence for each claim you make. 6. Analyze opposing views and deal with them honestly and fairly. 7. Call the audience to action. Or suggest a solution.

Visuals

Note that visual aids are critical to this assignment, so you will want to select, place, and thoroughly discuss at least two (2) visuals—charts, photographs, maps, drawings, cartoons, graphs, etc.—within the body of your essay.

Length

The essay will be 5-7 double-spaced pages, will follow MLA or APA format, and should be submitted as either a .doc or .docx attachment
