8. Peer Review: Examples

Process:

· Shortly after the first draft deadline, you will randomly be assigned 3 peer essays.

· To access them, click on the  "Personal Narrative: First Draft & Peer Review"  assignment that you just turned in. Under Submission, you will see "Assigned Peer Reviews." As people turn in their essays, 3 names should appear under this heading. Click on a name.

· Read through each peer's essay once without stopping, for an interrupted and overall first impression.

· Read through each peer's essay again, this time stopping to take notes on what is working and what is not.

· Review the  Peer Review Rubric.  As you can see, it is organized by criteria, such as “Title & Introduction," etc. By these means, you can systematically assess the different facets of one another's essays, which should help you generate more specific and constructive critiques.

· Be sure to provide at least  3 Corrections, 3 Suggestions, and 3 Questions  per peer! The corrections should regard form whereas the suggestions and questions should, ideally, regard content.

· In terms of where to leave of your feedback, (1) leave general comments under "Assignment Comments" AND (2) make specific line edits and annotations to your peers' actual essays via the  annotation tool in Canvas (Links to an external site.)

· Above all, ensure that your feedback is actionable. In other words, try to provide advice that is specific and explanatory enough that your peers can actually act on it--in terms of revision.

Deadline:

· Your peer reviews will be due by 11:59pm Friday, October 22nd.

Grading:

· 15 points total (5 points x 3 reviews)

Diagnosis:

· When you receive feedback about your essay, consider that feedback by rereading your draft with it in mind.

· You are, of course, free to accept or reject a classmate’s advice, but only after seriously considering it.
