HIST 111: Exam Two Study Guide

Essay Question

· This is worth 50 points (half the exam.)

· The essay should cover a minimum of 3 blue book pages.

· You will be required to answer the following question from the class lectures:

· Discuss the development of political parties between 1790 and 1840 (William Henry Harrison’s victory.) Be sure to mention the presidents and politicians involved and include significant events that relate to the topic (such as, significance of Louisiana Purchase to Jefferson’s political beliefs.) Do not forget to include classical Republicanism.

This is the required outline. Points will be deducted for failure to use this outline.

Introduction – Briefly state points of paper

I. Two Party System at Work – The 1790s (Federalism and Republicanism with significant events and political figures)

II. Jeffersonian Republicanism – 1800-1824 (How Jefferson and successors implemented Republicanism, how Federalists fought them)

III. Jacksonian Democracy – 1828-1839 (Jackson’s political beliefs, his and Van Buren’s implementation of their political views)

IV. Whig/Democrat Parties, Election of 1840

Conclusion – Restate main points of paper
