Essay on Business Environment [2000 words]

Please read the following before doing your assignments (major essay).

These comments are commonly used in grading the Major Essay and are common mistakes and that can be easily avoided. Use this as a checklist to avoid losing unnecessary marks. Additionally, read the assignment details in the Subject Guide and the marking rubrics for this assignment.

☐ Comment No. 1: Title/Cover page

Check that you have included all necessary requirements appropriately. i.e. JCU logo (in a small size); title of the task; order of names - author’s name first with ID then your lecturer or supervisor name can be indicated; your program; Semester and Year. Provide all these information directly without unnecessary words or pictures.

☐ Comment No. 2: Support Arguments with references

· You need to support your arguments with references. Simply, how do you know them? If not your information is not considered as credible or ‘worthy’ in academic writing. References MUST be included in academic papers. Just general statements are not worthy in academic writing; support from quality research/journal article readings.

· Only use articles from academically peer reviewed journals, research books, and publications by governments or institutions.

· This task requires 15 – 20 literature references

☐ Comment No. 3: APA referencing style

· If facts/views/ knowledge/data/figures /pictures are taken from other sources, these need to be acknowledged using APA referencing style.
 Relook APA referencing style link in your subject outline or workshop PPT (uploaded on your BB website of the subject). If you need further assistance, please ask from our Learning Support Unit.

· Need appropriate & genuine reference/source of information/ authentication; provide the genuine source of references that you have actually taken from.

☐ Comment No. 4 – Analytical Explanations

· Need more analytical explanations/ application/ knowledge gained from the subject and journal article readings (application of appropriate theories, concepts, frameworks and models). Need to demonstrate the use of relevant theories and models, figures to develop your argument. Simply summarizing the references adds no value; you need to critique, evaluate them and identify contradictory issues or gaps (if any).

· Need to focus on the task and analytical explanation than just writing information (analyse using appropriate theory etc. to find out key variables/facts and highlight them and discover impact and relationships of those variables/facts).

☐ Comments No. 5 – Avoid Bullet Points

· Bullet points in an academic essay are not appropriate. Bullet points/list etc. follow by analysis, are not accepted as critical and analytical explanations. It is good for you to have mind mapping/draft but not for writing your critical essay or descriptive assignment.

☐ Comments No. 6 – Charts/Figures/Diagrams/Graphs

· If you have charts/figures without proper link and discussion in the content/body of your report, and no application on them, then they are not counted as analytical applications and useful to gain marks. Don’t use just charts and figures without proper understanding about their appropriateness and usefulness to the task and analysis. Having them will not get marks if they are not relevant and related to the task and discussion.

· Figures, graphs, tables and charts require appropriate headings on the top of the figure/table etc. and source to be under/below the graph etc. Use more appropriate subject focused words/ statements.

- Formatting

· Formatting skills are needed in your academic work. Before submission, carefully relook your assignment whether all formatting errors have been fixed (i.e. paragraphing, commas, full-stop in appropriate places; line spacing (1.5); consistency of font and font size and /spelling/ deleting editing comments, etc.).

☐ Comment No 8 – Professional Presentation

· This is an academic work; it needs a professional presentation, structure (title page; introduction, headings and sub-headings, and conclusion), logical flow, and support form graph, charts data, journal readings, and examples etc.

· The use of slang, clichéd phrases and idiomatic expressions can confuse your readers and destroy the formal tone of your writing. Keep to formal tone in an academic report. Write in 3rd person.

· Avoid rhetoric or the undue use of exaggeration in your sentences - use simple, professional expressions and always maintain a formal tone.

· Rephrase run-on Sentence. Run-on sentence contains two or more independent clauses. Separate the clauses with a period or semicolon or break into separate sentences

☐ Comment No 9 – Focus on the task

· Need to focus on Assignment task only. Focusing on the task and going through your draft assignments few times before final submission can reduce unnecessary information.

· You must follow the instructions, format and the requirement on assignment: carefully read instructions before start of your assignment.
