My California

The 23rd of October of the year 2015, marked the beginning of my new journey. The

Journey of living in a different country, It was my first time being in the United States. Following

High school I earned a scholarship from the government to study abroad, any country of my

choice, and I chose the United States of America, California to be specific . The government

gave me a list of universities that I can apply to all over the United States. Therefore, I had to

apply for ten universities and wait to see which University the government would approve for me

to study in. My top three choices were California’s Universities then Florida’s

universities.Thankfully, I got accepted to study at California State University Long Beach which

was my first option. I was so excited because it was one of my many goals to study in California.

California is one of the greatest tourist attraction in the United States because of the features like

the Pacific beaches, the golden gate bridge, Sierra Nevada Mountains, redwood forest, the

central valley farmland, Alcatraz Island and the Mojave desert. It also has the best universities in

the world. Despite this, it is also among the most polluted and high cost of living states in the

world.

My vision regarding my educational experience in California is to be fluent in

English and get great grades in school. My English language was poor to a point that I could not

talk to people, and I was so nervous to do mistakes. Moreover, I was an antisocial student that

like to be quite. However, California’s people easily accept other cultures and are very welcome

for foreigners. From my personal experience, people in California would come to me ask me

about something then we would talk about other subjects and the conversation goes on and on

which helped me to improve and practice the English language. Even when I go to restaurants, or

stores, workers are very open to talk and to help me in other issues that I had. Therefore, I

learned the language very fast and started to read articles and understand the movies without

subtitles. Also, I made a lot of friends easily in school and out of school too. However, the high

cost of living standards is the only drawback. The living standards in California is very high

especial for those in middle and lower class category. A lot of bills like water, electricity, rent and

school fees have to be met without delays. Due to this, most individuals including me have to

prioritize the measures to be paid first ending up putting education as the last priority which

effects my grades in school.

My experience in California and parts of California regarding leisure activities are

enjoyable. There are many leisure activities takes place in Los Angeles city. Los Angeles has a

lot of spots for events to take place like the beaches. The beach is perfect for the outdoor

attraction and activities. The fresh sea and warm sand make it the best place to relax together

with the romantic sunset. Also, the best and affordable hotels and motels makes it the best place

for relaxing at night and enjoying the sweet food. Another leisure activities in Los Angeles is

biking, hiking and walking. Furthermore, Los Angeles is characterized by most actors which

provides the forms of entertainment to people and job opportunities for most of the people.

Adding to this, the tourist attraction sites like the beaches and the redwood forest provide indirect

employment to the people and also adds revenue to the country. Also, most people from

California engage themselves with the trending music .The several parks found in the Los

Angeles basin provides a relaxed environment for this activities during the day. beside Los

Angles, there are many beautiful mountains and national parks in California like Yosemite Park.

On the other hand, there are a lot of enjoyable parts of California is congested and polluted. This

pollution cannot be dispersed easily thus causing its concentration level to rise more resulting to

unhealthy conditions. A lot of cities in California have been polluted which further led to long-

term diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, delays in childhood development and premature

death. This experience is terrible as it led to diseases and even early deaths. In addition, Medical

services cost a lot of money which causes individuals to be financially unstable. Nevertheless,

California is one of the great places to visit and enjoy all the surrounding entertainments.

The California sound is one of the significant cultural production that reinforces

the perception. California sound is a popular aesthetic for music which originated from American

pop and rock who recorded the artist from southern California. Reinforcing is very important

because most of the songs are sold worldwide. Also, even those who had to go to the school of

music had a chance to sing and earn themselves together with the state money. Moreover,

different types of songs like with specific themes like pride, political, drug abuse and opposition

were sung with the aim of marinating peace and unity together with educating the public.

California police can be intimidating for some tourists because of how the media

and news show racism and discrimination. My family was very worried about being in California

and they told me to stay away from cops because I am Arabic, and that is intimidating to some

Americans. However, since 2016, I have never had any situation with racism which shows that

media and news perception is totally different from what I experienced.

One of the amazing things I noticed is the wide diversity. In California, there is a lot of

cultures and it is so amazing because there is diversity in food and accents. Personally, Because of the

diversity I felt that I am a citizen of the United States. People would think that I am American until I start

talking. On the other hand, it is easy for Middle Easters to notice each other even if we are outside the

country. In my opinion, I think that there is less discrimination and racism when there is this big of a

diversity. Because of the diverse culture, it was easy for me to find friends which helped me to improve

my language because I use English to communicate with my friends all the time. It is not necessary to

learn the language of the country that you live in. I lived in England and it was so hard for me to learn

English because people were not as open as California . Personally, I think California’s people easily

accept other cultures and are very welcoming for foreigners.

In conclusion, California has the best places for having the leisure activities, the

state is highly polluted and also has a very high cost of living. The living price is very high

which might chase people away though it's a right place for leisure. Also, the high pollution rates

which cause deaths and disease also discourage a lot of tourist from visiting hence lowering the

value of California. Due to these negatives, California is viewed as a not very desirable place to

live in for long term despite having the best spots for leisure activities.
