(P) My ability to remain patient helps me to be a better teacher for my students by creating my time and ‘space’ for the student to learn. (I) Patience keeps a person from getting too angry or frustrated when things don’t go exactly as planned. Having patience allows teachers to be a stable and familiar guide to students while they gain new knowledge in classes. Maintaining calm composure presents students with a positive model of behavior for when challenges arise during learning. Speed bumps on the path to success are unavoidable, so it’s important for students to learn the value of sticking with something even when the end isn’t in sight. (E) Students learning to be effective academic writers can often feel helpless if the topic of the writing doesn’t appear to relate to or inspire them. As a teacher, I have to help these students to not panic and help them to find a personal connection that will let them succeed on the assignment. The best ideas or successful approaches may not come flying out immediately. A willingness to search out and work through difficulty is a must for eventual achievement. (S) A teacher who lacks patience will only heighten the frustration and turmoil students often experience when struggling with new knowledge in class. Successful students require a learning environment that provides stability and understands their needs. I have learned to always maintain a patient demeanor, even when my students challenge it. Being a patient person helps both my students and myself to succeed in the classroom.
