Essay Project 4 Instructions

From the lists at the bottom of this page, choose any work of fiction and any literary device(s) and submit a five-paragraph essay consisting of the following: an introductory paragraph with the essay thesis as the last sentence, three body paragraphs that present and provide specific support and argument for the thesis, and a final summary paragraph that summarizes the points discussed in the body of the essay. Also feel free to use as a paper topic anything begun in previous essay project assignments as long as the thesis includes a claim about use of a literary device in the literature in relation to the chosen subject (for example, with Streetcar, a possibility is to make a comparison-and-contrast claim about the use of symbolism and figurative language in the play regarding the characters of Stanley and Blanche).

Expectations

Use your understanding of the materials covered in the course to guide your writing. The following are expectations:

· Create a clear thesis statement that is a claim regarding the use of a literary device or devices within the chosen work of fiction in relation to a subject of your choice.

· Analyze, not summarize. Limit plot summary to the introductory paragraph. Note that not having enough material to write about for the entire essay is only challenging in the absence of a working knowledge of the chosen literary devices in conjunction with performance of a close reading/analysis of the literature for use of said devices; in short, review the applicable reading assignments in relation to the chosen literary devices as necessary in order to write with obvious literary competence and have enough material to write about.

· Evidence-based argumentation from the text (i.e., quotation) that provides specific support and proof of the overall that is the thesis and the mini-claims of the thesis found in the topic sentences and subsequent body paragraphs.

· Write in third-person. That is, avoid use of I, me, my, we, us, our, you, and your.

· MLA format. Review the information and activities covered regarding MLA format as necessary.

· Works cited page. The page begins on a separate page from the body of the essay. It is permissible but not a requirement to use more than one source. Remember to record all sources used in the body of the essay on the works cited page.

· Appropriate paper structure. Use the Lesson 7 reading assignment and activities as a guide.
