Choose one question and write a well-developed and organized essay. Be certain to use details and quotations from the literature to support your opinions. Include at least two quotations. Quotations used should include citations and sources should be included in a Work Cited. Be certain you have a clear thesis statement, and remember you should write about literature in 3rd person present tense. The essay must be a minimum of 650 words. 1. Identify the stories Baldwin tells in “Notes of a Native Son.” How does Baldwin weave them together, and how do they contribute to the major theme of the essay? 2. Compare and contrast Baldwin’s “Notes of a Native Son” and “My Dungeon.” 3. Compare and contrast Coates’s Between the World and Me and Baldwin’s “My Dungeon Shook.” 4. Discuss how and why Coates historicizes and invokes the sanctity of the black body in Between the World and Me. 5. In Coates’s Between the World and Me, consider “the Dream” and our relationships to it. What does it mean to be “conscious citizen[s] of this terrible and beautiful world” (108)?
