Ethics and new genetics by Dalai Lamar
The current world is subject to both moral and technological changes; it has become hard for us to choose where we should go or to what level should we use both for our good. According to Dalia Lama article ‘Ethics and the New Genetics,’ he noted reasons as to why we should exercise our humanity at the same time developing technology, and in believing it is vital for us to balance between technology and humanity. Even though the adoption of technology has a positive impact on society, all the ethical value should be followed.
Otherwise, we would be violating our rights and making it unbearable. The world is round and what goes around always comes around. In this case, the decisions that we make today have an impact on us in the future. Human being has started equating themselves with God based on the inventions and adoption of latest technologies. The adoption of surveillance technology has made human beings to see things that go around them, and the adoption of biotechnology has allowed us to alter our cells and behaviours and other characteristics of humans.
Nonetheless, what is the outcome of the results and who will benefit from it? Some have argued that the adoption of these technologies will play a crucial role in improving human characters. The innovation has helped in exposing various characters in society; in short, it helps the society. On the other hand, the adoption of technology hurts our morals and ethical considerations.
Dalai Lama supported the reputation of genetic modifications in his essay. He believes that it is essential to have the ever-changing genetic composition, which helps sustain the ever-increasing population on earth. Nevertheless, he highlighted the negative effect of genetic alteration in our ecosystem in the long term. From Lama’s argument, there is a critical question on human feelings about new inventions or discoveries; yes we can, but should we do it? I think scientists should keep on discovering new things on our planet and allow people to make better choices to resolve ethical issues that are based on these inquiries.
From Lama’s essay, I would recommend that scientist should increase their genetic technology knowledge since having more information is essential in making better decisions. The genetic modification has various adverse effects on us. However, there are different possibilities that its implementations are advantageous and infinite. A researcher can quickly know the technological possibilities that are brought by technology. He revealed that “the earth is our only home. As far as the current scientific knowledge is concerned, this may be the only planet that supports life" (70). What the author implied is that an individual does not understand the world and its surroundings to come up with effective technology.
In would also recommend that researchers should use new knowledge to get more knowledge. By using these new skills and knowledge, the scientist can produce high quality and quantity of food for the ever growing population. It would also make it easy for the researches to find a cure for deadly diseases such as diabetes, cancer etc. These technologies have the power of making our lives better. As such, we need to make sure that there are no ethical values violated, for the technology to be effective, human rights must be respected.
The government should come up with ways of making sure technology is enhanced, and citizens are encouraged to take part. Human rights should be respected or safeguarded; this will improve people trust in technology. Moreover, this technology is for our goods, altering the genes are meant to improve our lives. Lama believes that knowledge is essential for technology to meet its goals and objectives. When an individual is doing something, he or she should understand precisely what he is doing and its repercussions. Motivation is the reason why someone is doing something. Having a good motivation implies that the work will be beneficial to all citizens. However, when the motives are not good, the outcome will not be favourable.
According to Lama “how can we find this moral campass? We must begin by putting faith in the basic goodness of human nature and we need to anchor this faith….” (69). I do not think that there is an issue of using a new organism in producing more food to support our significant population. The issue is the misuse of biotechnology for aesthetics and other motives. It can be noted that modifying babies before they are born for parent’s aesthetic purpose is mishandling innovation. This takes away children’s right; in this sense, some disorders are helpful to a child.
The suppression of new technology can be eliminated by educating the public and encouraging them to take part in scientific discussions. When the population is informed, there are fewer chances that unethical issues will mislead them and they will have answers to questions about these innovations. In order to address the present and future ethical issues, the public must understand the scientific discoveries particularly those with social and ethical repercussions.
In my opinion, technology is essential in our lives. The genetic discoveries made should be promoted; they are for our good. We all need food and cure for dangerous diseases; hence innovations should be permitted. The scientific concepts and ideas should be taught in schools for the benefit of our society. There are many benefits of new technologies that outweigh the risks.
It can be noted that ethics are vital but without technology, the population would be at risks, it may start to reduce. There are many diseases and other dangerous illness that are found daily without technology, the human population would not be able to survive. We would not have the necessary vaccines or any help without the use of technology. The adoption of technology is the primary source of development of the human race as a way of helping in the prolonged in the life expectancies and helps in collecting the information that is helpful in making future decisions.
