Essay 3

Like the previous paper assignment, for your final paper you must perform a close reading of one the course texts. You may write about any of the texts, provided you did not already write about it in a previous paper. As before, the specific topic is up to you. The only stipulations are: (1) you need to identify a problem in one of the texts and write about it, making a claim about what the text means, along with why and how it generates that meaning. In other words, you must make an argument about the text (that is, you must do more than notice some interesting details—you must use them to prove a further claim or insight that someone could reasonably argue against); (2) you must base your argument on direct evidence from the text itself, paying special attention to the nuances and ambiguities of the words. My advice is to focus in on a few quotes, and really dig into the nuances of what is and isn't being said, specific word choices, grammar, etc. If you are having trouble coming up with a topic, I suggest that you write about a moment in a text that particularly affected you, and do a close reading explaining how and why the text made you feel as it did.
