The Forms of Cultural Capital and The Right to the City: The Struggle of Poverty in the Films Amores Perros, City of God, Sin Nombre, and Diarios de Una Motocicleta.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------. To explain the problems of wealth and property distribution in Latin America, this essay will analyze the films Amores Perros, City of God, Sin Nombre, and Diarios de Una Motociclet. using the theories of Pierre Bourdieu’s The Forms of Cultural Capital and David Harvey’s The Right to the City.
To understand the struggles of wealth seen throughout the films, one must first understand the two theories used within the analysis of these films. According to David Harvey, ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Similar to Harvey’s theory, Pierre Bourdieu explains Cultural Capital as assets that give one person an advantage over others as a collection of symbolic elements. In other words, Bourdieu describes that the more capital someone has, the more they try to display, done in the way they dress, eat, speak…etc, ultimately demonstrating power they hold. Not only does this specify capital as power, but it also elaborates that culture capital comes in three forms; Embodied, Objectified, and Institutionalized, which overall symbolize their given cultural competence and authority (Bourdieu).
