rhetorical analysis
The essay will begin with a paragraph that introduces the two sources you’ve chosen (the films or articles), lists the rhetorical choices found, and incorporates a thesis statement in which you explain what you have found by comparing/contrasting rhetoric found in the films or articles. From there, you will use one of the following organization techniques to identify, exemplify, compare/contrast, and interpret rhetoric. Organization method options:
● By text: this structure focuses on one text (one film or article) at a time and uses a transition paragraph midway through to change the focus to the other source.
○ Paragraph 2: Rhet choice 1 in Twilight ○ Paragraph 3: Rhetorical Choice 2 in Twilight ○ Paragraph 4: Rhetorical Choice 3 in Twilight ○ Paragraph 5: Rhetorical Choice 4 in Twilight ○ Paragraph 6: Transition to text 2 ○ Paragraph 7: Rhetorical Choice 1 in Hotel Trans ○ Paragraph 8: Rhetorical Choice 2 in Hotel Trans ○ Paragraph 9: Rhetorical Choice 3 in Hotel Trans ○ Paragraph 10: Rhetorical Choice 4 Hotel Trans ○ Concluding paragraphs: compare/contrast technique and meaning
● By rhetorical features: this structure discusses one rhetorical choice that applies to both texts, provides examples from both texts, and the compares/contrast techniques or effects.
○ Rhetorical choice 1 in Twilight ○ Rhetorical choice 1 in Hotel Trans ○ Comparison/contrast of technique and meaning ○ Rhetorical choice 2 in text 1 ○ Rhetorical choice 2 in text 2 ○ Comparison/Contrast of technique and meaning ○ Rhetorical choice 3 in text 1 ○ Rhetorical choice 3in text 2 ○ Comparison/Contrast of technique and meaning ○ Concluding paragraphs interpret meaning of the texts more deeply
Ideal individual paragraph structure:
● Clearly name the rhetorical choice being discussed ● Incorporate 1-2 examples ● Examine how the rhetorical choice influences meaning
