What the assignment is: This essay is a continuation of the skills you have developed in your 1101 (close reading, rhetorical analysis, paragraph development, argumentation). For this assignment, you will think critically about a primary text and develop an original argument supported by evidence. Students will also locate and employ reputable secondary materials in the execution of the argument. Purpose: The writer will demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research via a variety of sources, critically examine all evidence, and synthesize these sources directed toward the development of an original argument. Specifically, the assignment asks writers to examine various texts and media on related topics, considering how these texts inform and interact with one another in conversation. Identifying a critical conversation, writers will then practice participating meaningfully in such conversations via informed critical response. Consider how pop culture can comment on performativity (the relationship between word and action) and personas (​the public image of one's personality, or the social role that one adopts, or a fictional character, depending on context), and ​how they connect to larger social issues such as race, class, sexuality, gender, etc. Consider how this occurs in ​ONE​ song from ​Hamilton ​and construct a ​specific​ argument discussing how the text addresses one of these topics and to what purpose
