An own thoughts discussion essay
Essay 2: A Discussion (20 points) Context: Until now, you’ve selected a subject, researched it, synthesized findings, and have had the opportunity to think of your own ideas. Your literature review presented many different perspectives from other sources, but this paper is where you make your own thoughts clear and support your views by making logical statements, connections to resources, and employing even more academic resources. In the more “traditional” claim-based essay format, you will begin with a claim (a thesis statement or “statement of purpose”) of your own and use further resources and logical reasoning to ensure that your readers understand your work to be a thoughtful addition to the conversation. Assignment: Write an essay in which you explain and support the reasoning for your own view of the matter you’ve researched. This essay should have a singular focus, unlike your literature review. Getting started/Creating an angle:
1. Why is the topic worth discussing? a. Why did you choose the subject that you did? b. Now that you’re more informed, what is your overall impression of the subject? c. What is missing from the research you’ve done? d. How do you want to add to the research?
2. What general statement would you like to make, and why do you see it as something worth saying?
a. Write down all reasons you can think of for your point being logical or worth consideration (don’t filter yourself - you can always cut out anything that doesn’t work later, but filtering will cause undue stress to present perfection that isn’t expected in a rough draft!)
