Additional Guidelines for Essay 2

Full details for the assignment can be found on pp. 694-697 of WAW. Beyond what is included in WAW, you also should take note of the following.

Genre & Audience

The genre here is academic, and more specifically, you will be using the academic conventions for textual analysis used in writing studies and rhetoric studies. Your audience consists of your classmates and instructor. Keep in mind that not everyone in your audience has read the text you will be analyzing.

Length

Your final draft should be 1,200-1,500 words (4-5 pages double-spaced). Final drafts that are less than 1,200 words cannot earn a grade higher than 65/100. A works cited page must be included but does not count towards the length requirement.

Sources

You will select the text to be analyzed by finding a scholarly article in writing studies through a UMKC library database. You need to use additional texts, like the assigned readings from Chapter 4 of WAW or other library materials to help you historicize or analyze your selected scholarly article.

You must have at least 2 additional sources outside of the text you are analyzing that support your claims.

All sources must be clearly attributed to their authors/creators through the use of MLA in-text citation and be listed in the works cited page at the end of the essay.

SUBMITTING YOUR ROUGH DRAFT & PEER REVIEW

Your rough draft of Essay 1 must be submitted to Canvas by 9 PM Thursday, October 10th. You will turn it in to the “Essay 2 Rough Draft” assignment on the home page.

Peer review groups will be selected in class on October 11th.

Round 1 of Peer Review will be due before class on October 14th.

Round 2 of Peer Review will be due before October 16th.

SUBMITTING YOUR FINAL DRAFT

Final drafts will be submitted to Canvas by 9 PM on Sunday, October 20th. You will turn it in to the “Essay 2 Final Draft” assignment on the home page. Your final draft will be submitted to TurnItIn (TII).

For TurnItIn: Remove any identifying information, like your name or student number. Submit as a Word or PDF file.

Revisions on Essay 2 are only possible for students if a complete version of the essay is turned in to Canvas on time by Sunday, October 20th at 9:00 PM. The student must then schedule a conference with the instructor before turning in a revised copy. The student may earn up to a 10% increase from their original score. Revisions will be accepted for this essay until November 22nd at 9:00 PM.
