A Brief Situational Statement:

In her “History of Fake News” article, Joanna Burkhardt lists a few hoax websites that might be used as “cautionary examples” of fake information on the internet. She says that using a “checklist of criteria to identify fake news websites [is] relatively easy.”

The steps of this exercise:

1. Visit one of the hoax websites Burkhardt cites or another “fake” article or website that you might find on your own.

2. Read chapter 52 in Rules for Writers, paying particular attention to the information about evaluating sources online (pages 377-388)

3. Using the criteria explained in our book, explain how one could identify that website as a hoax.

Details of this exercise:

1. Use MLA format. Keep it under 2 double spaced pages.

Submit a 1-2 sentence thesis statement for the essay. I'm calling this a "working" thesis statement because the goal is to have a starting point. I will comment on it, so be sure to read the comments before you revise or decide to keep it.
