Write a well-organized minimum five paragraph essay of no less than 500 words (more is usually better) on the following topic.   Be sure to use specific examples/information from the textbook to support your essay. Fully explain any quotes included in your essay.  You may only use the textbook and the author supplied videos embedded in the class; no outside sources are permitted.  Be sure to cite the textbook using the format (Foner, page#). The essay rubric is attached.

Explain the following statement.  The expansion of slavery, the market revolution and reform movements both expanded and reduced the experience of freedom in the United States during the period from 1789 through the 1840s.    Use three examples from the chapters to explain and support your points.

Your essay should contain the following elements.

1. A brief discussion of the relationship between the ideas and experiences of freedom and how slavery, the market revolution and the reform movements impacted them. Use information from each of the five chapters covered by this exam.  

2. Include a discussion that addresses all three, slavery, reform, market revolution.

3. Use three specific examples of each from the readings to support your analysis.

The structure of your essay should be as follows:

Paragraph one = An introduction that outlines the issues.

Paragraph Two = Discussion of slavery and its impact on the experience of freedom.  Include one example.

Paragraph Three = Discussion of the market revolution and the impact on the experience of freedom.   Include one example.

Paragraph Four = Discussion of the reform movements and their impact on the experience of freedom.   Include one example.

Paragraph Five = Conclusion which summarizes your three supporting paragraphs.
