Essay Assignment #2
Gordon Allport and Gloria Naylor discuss how individuals are labeled by language, both in positive and negative terms, and the effects of these labels upon them. Labels can be derived from one’s background, skin color, schooling, sexuality, culture, appearance, mannerisms, learning disabilities, choices, etc. While some labels can be positive to some, others might find them derogatory.
Essay Prompt: Make an extensive list of the labels that have been or could be applied to you at this time. Write an essay in which you discuss the labels that you find “truly offensive,” those you can “live with,” and those that you “like to be associated with.” Explain your reasons for putting particular labels in each of these categories.
