Essay 1 Assignment

A Response Paper on Edgar A. Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado”

1. Read the pdf of Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado.”

2. Write a response paper on one of the topics below. Read the sample papers provided. You will use the MLA style format and the Word 2016 template

3. Choose one of the following topics to base your essay on:

• Characters and conflicts in the story

• The setting of the story (time and place)

• Symbols in the story

• Instances of irony in the story

4. This being your first essay, I suggest you write about the setting of the story.

5. You will write the Introductory Paragraph of your Essay 1 assignment (a response paper on one of the topics for Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" —Your Intro Paragraph must have a Title, Hook, Transition Sentences, and a thesis that matches your Title. Your Title should derive from one of the four topics on the assignment. Follow your Intro Paragraph with your Body Paragraph 1, which must have a Topic Sentence that matches your thesis.

6. You will write both paragraphs using the MLA format, on Word 2016, and will submit your document here, as a Word document, no PDF, no Google Docs, Notepad, or anything other than a regular Word document. I just want those two paragraphs, not the whole essay. And remember, no in-text citations. I want to read your opinions, not someone else's.
