The first literary genre we’ve studied for this class is the short story because it provides us with an opportunity to learn and apply literary analysis skills to a variety of short works. Our reading and classroom discussions and activities have been intended to prepare you either to write a thematic analysis of one story or to write a comparison/contrast of two stories.
Choose one of the following assignment options.
Option A: Choose any short story from our syllabus, or another story in our text which interests you, and write a thematic analysis of it, making sure the theme you choose is original (not discussed thoroughly in class). You should employ whatever literary terms are useful to the unfolding of the particular theme you’re focusing on in your particular story.
Structure:
· Introduction: Your essay should open with a creative hook that shows your personal connection to the story and its relevance to our world. Then you should transition into a brief summary of the story and end the paragraph with a clear statement of your thesis, in which you make a claim about one theme the story contains.
· Body: Your body paragraphs should support your theme by using literary elements and quotes from the text. You should avoid summarizing the plot or moving chronologically through the story. Instead, for example, look at the story’s point of view, its characters, its setting, and its title.
· Conclusion: Return to a clear statement of your thesis and your opening hook.
Example Thesis:
In “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, Arnold Friend represents Connie’s sexuality, and through a close study of his character and their interaction, we can see that the emergence of sexuality is both frightening and inevitable.
Option B: Find a thematic likeness between any two of the short stories we’ve read, and write a thesis which explores how these stories look at the same idea either quite similarly or quite differently. You’ll want your thesis to emphasize either the similarities (comparison) or the differences (contrast) although you can include both in your discussion.
