Essay: Persuasive Argument
The purpose of a persuasive argument is to influence the beliefs of others. The goal is to persuade others to adopt a certain view and/or to take a particular action. There are three strategies that can be used in arguments to support your claim: appeals to logos (logic), ethos (credibility), and pathos (emotions).
Topic:
The average student loan debt in Ohio is $30,239. According to the Department of Education, new data reveals that 13.8 percent of student loan borrowers defaulted on their loans within three years of entering repayment. To combat these problems, the State of New York has recently offered free tuition to two or four-year public college students whose families earn less than $100,000 per year. Other countries also offer a free college education.
Should higher education in the United States be free? If not, should student loan debt in the U.S. be forgiven for graduates entering specific professions? Who is harmed and who is helped if student loans are forgiven?
Assignment:
Using the five strategies identified in chapter three of Argument Today, prepare a persuasive written argument on the topic above. Keep the following in mind as you compose your argument:
· Be sure to state a reasonable and specific claim for your argument (thesis).
· Support your claim through appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos.
· Use examples, facts, and statistics to support your argument.
· Be careful to avoid logical fallacies (flaws in the structure of an argument that invalidate your claims)
You are free to use personal anecdotes or testimonies as support for your argument, however, you cannot rely solely on personal anecdotes as your sole source of evidence. In other words, you are required to present evidence from scholarly sources.
