Reading Level 4 – Outside Readings

Summary Reviews

If you want to master the English language and be a successful college student, you must read more than just the textbook. Read a short journal article or newspaper on a field that interests you. Your topic could be a new invention or technique in a field you are interested in, a new law that impacts you, or the economic or financial status of the field you are interested in or your country. Remember that your classmates and teacher may not know anything about your field or topic. It is your job to make your topic clear to your audience.

Part One: Understand your article

Find and read a news article or research article on a topic you care about that is written in English . Type a summary and your reaction (2 paragraphs) of your reading. Your reaction should explain why this topic is of interest to you and how it can impact the rest of the field/world.

Next, write 5 unfamiliar vocabulary words that you find in your reading.

Each vocabulary item must include:

· New vocabulary word

· Translation in your first language

· Synonym or brief definition

· Brief original sentence or example

These must be saved using Microsoft word and submitted into ecampus by the due date. Each entry must have the 3 parts—1. Summary (with citation/url), 2. Reaction, 3. New vocabulary

Due Date: Every other Monday beginning Monday, September 17th Ending on November 19th (9/17; 10/1; 10/15; 10/29; 11/12; 11/19)

Part Two: Oral Summary Presentation:

Each student will give a brief (two-three minute) presentation on one of the journal readings that they have done. In this presentation, students will summarize what reading they chose to discuss and their reaction to it. Notes are allowed, but no reading! We will sign up for presentations later.

Summation

Disney Should Have Looked Elsewhere For Its Remake Princess

In the article “ Disney should have looked elsewhere for its remake princess”, which posted on the Daily Trojan on March 30, Minnie Schedeen, the author, stated that the Disney company should considered another princess movie to remake, which is more meaningful and instructive for the next generation. Schedeen claimed that the remake of Cinderella was shinny and spent a lot of money and time and people also was impressed about the incredible tiny waist of Lily James, but she still had her own wondering. She thought that the plot of Cinderella was just an innocent girl who had naïve illusion about life and then had a godmother who helped her have beautiful dress and shoes. Schedeen suggested that Frozen was much better, more meaningful and had more girl power for young teenagers. Also, Schedeen expressed her support for the new remake movie of Disney, Mulan, because Mulan was inspired and gave people encouragement.

Reaction

Even though the author expressed really sufficient and reasonable information, I cannot agree with her. I think that Cinderella is really a good and instructive movie. It can teach people that kind is everything. If you can stay kind and warm to the world, the fortune will finally find you. It is really meaningful. Also, I really want to say that Cinderella is a beautiful dream of every girl. Some meaning of the movie may be just that some adults put it on purpose. We should protect the purity of this beautiful story. It is also a protection of girls’ dream.
