Page 21 of the Study Guide has the best ESL strategies that can be incorporated into the St. Patrick’s Day lesson. I have also included 18 more ESL Strategies that can be used.

ESL Strategies

1.  Place students in mixed level groups or partners

2.  Use same language partners when possible

3.  Encourage students to communicate with simple words

4.  Use pictures and visual aids

5.  Give oral tests

6.  Simplify written tests

7.  Shorten written tests so they have time for translation

8.  Offer a tutorial session just for non-speakers (this can be rotated within your academic team)

9.  Extend time for assignments to be completed (remember, they have to translate)

10. Shorten assignments because they will have to translate the material

11.Use technology (iPads) or bilingual dictionaries to aid with translation or clarification

12. Review (oral, pictorial or written) as often as possible

13. Use manipulatives

14. Students should sit in the front of the class

15. Have students build a card file of vocabulary words and give them a grade for it

16.  Read orally as often as you can

17.  Encourage students to speak aloud so they will participate in your classroom

18.  Allow other students to peer teach and give them extra credit
