PSYC 2003 Week 5 Assignment: Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory

PSYC 2003: Week 5 Assignment: Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory

Part 1 Directions: Connecting Erikson’s Theory to Personal Experiences

In the field associated with each stage, indicate the result of each stage when reflecting on your personal development. Discuss features of your development that suggest the outcome you have indicated. For example, if you chose “mistrust” for the first stage, describe (in 50–100 words) what you believe your experiences may have been at that time to lead to that outcome and what experiences you have had later in life that have further suggested this outcome.

Note: You will be providing all answers within this document and submitting the final paper to your Instructor by Day 7 of Week 5.

Examples:

· Trust: I assume I experienced trust with this stage, as I had responsive caregivers as an infant, and there are family stories about how they soothed me and nurtured me. Later in life, I would say I am a pretty trusting person.

· Mistrust: I assume I experienced a general sense of mistrust after this stage, because my parents worked a lot and shared that I was with a lot of apathetic babysitters and substandard daycares during this time. They also believed that it was important to let babies cry to develop the lungs, so it is likely I did not learn to trust them. Later in life, I find I am a pretty cautious person, and some of my exes have described me as having trust “issues.”

1. Trust vs. Mistrust: Birth to 18 Months Old

I am almost certain I experienced trust. My most trusted adult figures raised me. I have no memories, but the pictures prove me right. I am a trustworthy person.

I can say there was mistrust. I have always wanted my mom but whenever she said she was coming, it never happened. That’s where my mistrust lie.

2. Autonomy vs. Shame: 18 Months to 3 Years

I was a little spoiled with my grandparents and I did get to delegate somethings later in childhood, so I am sure it didn’t start there.

I remember being shame around new people because I was always a lone child at my grandparent’s house.

3. Initiative vs. Guilt: 3 to 5 Years

Early on I was always trying and wanting to do and experience everything. I wanted to learn how to do things around the house and I tried my hand without being forced or asked.

I found myself feeling guilty as a young girl and even now as the reason my mother didn’t have me with her.

4. Industry vs. Inferiority: 6 to 12 Years

Inferiority was all I felt in elementary and junior high. The kids were so mean if you didn’t dress a certain way or had money for snack. I always felt as if they were talking about me and criticizing me for the poor looking clothes I had on. I felt less than equal because I didn’t have what they had and I was alone for that reason.

As far as industry goes, I was always able to do seemingly difficult tasks and I wanted more and I stopped at nothing to achieve them.

5. Identity vs. Role Confusion: 12 to 18 Years

6. Intimacy vs. Isolation: 18 to 35 years

I have never had a problem with intimacy therefore avoiding it doesn’t apply. Isolation is something I can not relate to.

7. Generativity vs. Stagnation: 35 to 65 years

8. Integrity vs. Despair: 55 or 65 to Death

Part 2 Directions: Critiquing Erikson’s Stages

Now that you have applied all of Erikson’s stages to your own development, you will critique this theory by integrating your application of the different stages.

· Does Erikson’s theory accurately explain how you have become “you,” or are there unexplained features about you that the theory did not address? Explain, using specific examples from Part 1 of this Assignment.

· Consider the age ranges given in the theory. Do you find them to be accurate representations of life stages as we know them today, or do you think some updates to this theory would be necessary to describe modern people? Explain.

· Discuss two criticisms that you have of Erikson’s theory, including options to address these criticisms.
