Worker safety training is essential, more so in highly hazardous places like the construction industry. In the US, employers, safety advocacy organizations, and governments make safety training available. Weinstock and Slatin (2016) researched the effectiveness of training conducted by 'National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).' The study involved a review of different viewpoints on the purpose of safety training. The researchers found out that the movement of construction workers increases their ability to eliminate and reduce construction risks and hazards are more appropriate and scientifically rigorous than trying to change the working manners of constructors exposed to unsafe conditions. Training of employees should integrate with workers' attainment of power to identify risks to achieve fewer fatalities when operating in a hazardous environment.
Bharthvajan and Kavitha (2019) did a study to analyze the results of the literature on the importance of induction training. The study also focused on workers' training in a company and its relationship with the staff. The primary data was collected through a questionnaire from fifty employees. The secondary data was collected from the company broaches. From this study, an induction training program is necessary for effective performance. The researchers argue that training plays a critical role in the construction industry. Induction training improves efficiency and helps enhance the quality of employees' working lives. The study emphasizes the importance of frequent evaluation and monitoring of employee performance during and after induction training. The limitation of this study is that it used a small sample population.
Norman, Xiao, Li, & Leamy (2021) did a study to determine the impact of training on workers. The study involved a review of literature from seven databases. Twenty-three research papers met the inclusion conditions, and three first aid training models were used in these studies. Broad training outcomes were considered, and this includes the satisfaction, learning, and behavior of workers. The literature reviewed demonstrates that first aid training improves risk awareness and skills needed to help colleagues involved in an accident. Moreover, first aid training improves personal value and promotes worker's resilience. The limitation of this study is that it fails to adequately highlight how first aid training should be applied or adapted. The limitation implies that it is difficult to evaluate and determine the training results. While the behavioral impact of first aid training is evidenced-based, there is a need to improve the evaluation methods of the outcomes to strengthen the implementation of the first aid training.
Kodur (2020) conducted a study to determine fire hazard issues and protection measures in construction sites. The paper presents a review of the current fire safety actions. The researchers propose enhancing fire safety through training and resource advancement. Improving worker's awareness and proper enforcement of building codes is essential to mitigate fire hazards in buildings. Fire safety training programs advocated include rational fire design approaches and developing cost-effective fire suppression systems. Moreover, construction sites should have developed performance-based codes. This study demonstrates the significant challenges of existing fire safety strategies and helps identify new ways of overcoming these limitations. Training is needed to enhance building fire safety.
Namian and Albert (2016) conducted a study to assess the impact of safety training on hazard recognition. The research relied on secondary data from 51 projects in the US. The results revealed that training on safety risk depends on hazard recognition, and high engagement training results in higher hazard recognition. The findings of this study can be used in improving training delivery and risk assessment.
