Topic: Effects of Overpopulation on the Environment

The rapid increase in the human population globally is increasing pressure on the environment leading to depletion of natural resources and environmental degradation. Population growth threatens the future of a sustainable environment through global warming, loss of biodiversity, depletion of non-renewable resources, production of waste, and destruction of natural habitats. Currently, the world population is over 7.6 billion people and continues to grow rapidly, outpacing the ability of the earth to support it, owing to human practices such as over-farming and pollution. While a growing population is associated with growing economies and affluence, the big question remains to be what can be done to support the growing population while ensuring sustainable environments. Governments should consider implementing policies aimed at controlling populations such as women empowerment, family planning, and foster gender equity. Because such policies will help women understand the pressure of population on the environment and how population control can help create greener environments in the future. Good governance coupled with sustained economic growth might have a permanent effect in controlling population growth.
