The possibilities that new digital technologies and powerful tools like social media are being integrated into emergency management and how emergency response crews respond to natural disasters is saving more lives than ever before. The use of technology like social media, drones, satellite imagery through GIS, real-time disaster modeling, and widespread connectedness means more efficient and immediate flow of information. Integration of real-time data allows emergency management and responders to develop more targeted response plans, a technological jump from search and rescue strategies decades ago. As advances like weather models, seismic sensor arrays, and GIS systems advance, the modeling of pending natural disasters allows us to know earlier and with better precision the when the next major disaster will occur. Technology is bringing the EM and humanitarian organizations from the analog to digital age, allowing federal, state and local officials to be better prepared and ultimately, save more lives.
