Journal #2

Journal #2 Prompt:

How do you feel about tattoos? Do you have any tattoos? What are they, and why did you get them? Do you have plans to get tattoos in the future?  If so, what is your "dream" tattoo?

Make sure you are using the MLA format.  Journal entries should be one paragraph with 8 - 10 sentences.

(I’m an African American woman and do not have any tattoos – info to help answer questions)

Pre-writing, Tattoo Writing Assignment

1

Step 1: Stating your point

No unread replies.No replies.

This week we will begin working through all four steps in the writing process to write our first major paragraph assignment:

1. Discover your point

2. Support your point with specific evidence

3. Organize your support

4. Revise and edit

The best way to get through steps 1 and 2 in the writing process is to use a  pre-writing exercise.

This discussion board will serve as a type of pre-writing.

By working through the rest of the assignments in the next couple of modules, we are going to write an exemplification paragraph to answer this question:  Why do people get tattoos?

Exemplification is a big word but has a very simple meaning!  It means to use  specific examples as your supporting evidence. That means that, in order to answer our question, you will need to think of specific examples of tattoos that you can describe.

For this discussion board, let's get through Steps 1 and 2 in the writing process.

First, provide three reasons that you think people get tattoos. Underneath each reason, describe a specific example of that kind of tattoo.  Like this:

Reason #1: People get tattoos to express their religion.

Example: For example, my Uncle Steve has a tattoo of a Celtic cross on his shoulder. It's big, very detailed, and green. Underneath the cross, it says "John 3:16" in green cursive writing. He says this shows people around him that he is a Christian.

Do not conduct any research for this paragraph; I'm only looking for your own experience or the experiences of people you know.  If you look up reasons why people get tattoos, you will receive a zero for plagiarism.

Second, read through your classmates' posts. Find three people who listed at least one of the same reasons you did. Reply to their post with a different specific example of that type of tattoo.

By the end of this assignment, you should have decided on your three reasons why people get tattoos and some good, interesting examples for each reason.

Next week, we will organize all of this to get ready for writing a rough draft!
