This image portrays Saudi Arabia’s unwillingness to cooperate within the global oil economy. More specifically, this was illustrated ahead of the 2016 OPEC+ meeting when oil prices were above $50 per barrel, which was in part due to Saudi Arabia’s inaction against the stabilization of oil prices. Six years later, this image is still topical as oil prices have climbed above $100 a barrel. Concurrently, OPEC+, along with one of its chief members, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, can affect economic stability by stabilizing oil prices, thereby mitigating the effects of the current crisis in Ukraine.

This image depicts OPEC holding the non-Arab world hostage through their comparative advantage within the global energy sector. It was illustrated in 1973, when OPEC deliberately reduced oil production to inhibit the American economy because the Americans supported Israel in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. Currently, America, along its European allies, could potentially be in a similar position over the situation in Ukraine. Russia, a member of OPEC+, and Saudi Arabia will decide at the end of March how to regulate their microeconomy. If they decide not to increase production, this image will, once again, resonate with reality.

This image depicts President Joe Biden on his knees begging OPEC to increase oil output. President Joe Biden has legislated policies to mitigate climate change, but these policies are diametric to domestic oil production. Since Joe Biden’s progression towards carbon neutrality has digressed us from necessary oil output levels, we are becoming more reliant and codependent on oil imports. Currently, as the crisis in Ukraine shows no signs of getting better, the American energy sector is becoming more vulnerable to disadvantageous decisions by OPEC.
