My sister and I are first generation college students. It was very important

for us to go to college because our family didn't have that luxury. I’m a

first-generation American, and college-student who had a hard time

navigating the educational system. Going to college at South Seattle

Community College was the best thing that happened to me, even though I didn't get the help that I needed from friends or family. Financial aid is a

money pit that sits there year after year yet a lot of students don’t know how

to apply for it and don’t take advantage of it. I didn't know about financial

aid until my sister told me about the TRIO program. The staff, the TRIO

plan and the financial aid assistance are the real help of consultants. One

barrier of obtaining a college education is being able to afford it. South

Seattle Community College, TRIO program really helped me with learning

about financial aid and attending college. The TRIO should be known

through different community colleges and be promoted by teachers,

students and parents nationwide for all its benefits to students. TRIO

programs are groups of federally funded programs designed to serve

students from disadvantaged backgrounds, “like mine”, in their pursuit of

higher education. The TRIO program specifically helps students who

identify as low income, first generation, and/or disabled. Going to South

Seattle Community college changed my life drastically because not only did

it educate me but opened up opportunities for greater careers. TRIO is a

great program to have but, some students can't get it because they are a

little past the income cutoff threshold or because they do not take

advantage of it. The state should add TRIO programs to all colleges because

of the stress on tuition. It is important that parents encourage their

children and the state holds them accountable, because college builds social

life, improves intelligence and ability to communicate, creates more career

opportunities and encourages self-growth. Some challenges I might have is

finding raw data of how many students it has helped, and how it has helped

them. Another challenge may be figuring out how the TRIO program helps

students who have graduated from post-secondary education, or at a

high-school level. Now that I am a student at the South Seattle Community

College, I have greatly improved my grammar, and other writing and

reading techniques. Rather than taking literature or information at face

value, college has taught me to question everything and to think more

critically. Classes require participation and team-work and in turn it

teaches you how to communicate with people who may have differing ideas

and opinions.

the state for every student that needs financial needs. Like myself, I had no

idea about the TRIO program if it wasn't for my sister. A question I have is

does every college have this program? It is a program that helped me in

many ways and students should know about this. Does high schools teach

about this program? If the finals are not enough for students, will the TRIO

plan increase with the increase of books and expenses? I will need to do

research for these questions to include in my final draft.
