APRON

DEFINITION:

A protective garment, usually made from cloth, leather, or plastic. Worn on the front of the body and tied around the waist with strings.

ORIGIN:

From the Latin mappa, meaning napkin; ; to Middle French nappe, diminished from nape cloth or tablecloth; to Middle English alteration naperon; to English napron, and apron.

USE:

Aprons maintain kitchen hygiene protocols. They prevent bacteria, germs, dust, hair, and other contaminants from invading food during preparation. Also necessary for personal safety, aprons provide a barrier against liquids, heat, kitchen equipment, and previously mentioned contaminants.

CLASSIFICATION:

Although this definition details culinary use of aprons, the term has other uses and definitions. Many industries and artists, for example blacksmith’s and glassblowers, use aprons for protection. Aprons may be purely decorative, worn on holidays such as Thanksgiving or Valentine’s Day. An apron is part of traditional dress for members of the clergy. As a building term, it is piece of a larger structure, for example, an apron covers the front of a stage, or is adjacent to a driveway. Anatomically, apron refers to a large fold or flap o fat that hangs over the abdomen.
