Argument Proposal
English 1A: Research Proposal Guidelines
Your Research Proposal should consist of a minimum of two pages. Page one will address the written proposal, written in essay format. It must be a minimum of one full page. Page two will provide a Bibliography of three sources you are intending on using for the Annotated Bibliography and Essay 4 assignments. Bibliographies have the same formatting and MLA citations as a Works Cited page, but are titled Bibliography and include all works consulted, rather than just the ones that are cited in an essay. The Research Proposal should be typed according to MLA formatting. It must include the following items written in essay format:
1. A drafted title for Essay 4 as the sub title. For instance, title your Research Proposal
Research Proposal: Draft Title for Essay 4
2. An introduction of your specific topic. What is the subject or topic? Provide a detailed description of what the research focus is.
3. An explanation of how your topic fits within or applies to the larger context of children at war.
4. A brief discussion of the area of study surrounding your topic. What do researchers related to your topic study? Why do they study it? What larger questions or similar issues require more investigation? (Remember, your thesis for Essay 4 is presenting a new argument about your topic and field of research, so think about what larger issues or questions your paper will provide the answers for).
5. After discussing the general context of your topic, now discuss the three sources you will include in the Bibliography. Be sure to give the author(s), title of the work, what topic(s) or issue(s) they are addressing, and what their main claims are.
6. Finally, conclude your written proposal with your thesis statement for Essay 4. REMEMBER: You must provide a logical transition into your thesis statement. Do not just put it at the end.
7. Once the written proposal is complete, you must include a Bibliography of your three sources. These should be correctly formatted on a separate (second) page. No annotations are needed for the Bibliography. Title this page Bibliography, and follow MLA citation formatting as you would for a Works Cited page.
REMEMBER: The Proposal is to be typed in essay format, not numbered and answered. Follow the steps in order, but write complete paragraphs.
