English 111 - Week 11
Brain storming for synthesis paper

So, I'm a little bit confused as to what we are supposed to be problematizing. I know that we are supposed to use some of the articles we have read. I was going to use Leamnson, bell hooks, Mezirow,Rose and maybe a little bit from my Psychology book. We just did a unit about learning.
I was thinking about how tough it is going from a high school mindset of learning to a college level mindset. All of these authors have perspectives on incoming freshman and what usually trips them up. I'm going to go into how they might be accurate or not and my perspective as a freshman.
Yeah buddy, I do have a Problem

Some issues I could problematize for my synthesis paper include: students not having a desire or any type of drive to learn, not being able to understand (or problematize) the root of their own reading issues, or having the wrong frame of mind. I could also discuss problems that I relate to a little closer such as a lack of focus and patience (procrastination?). I’m not quite sure which I’m going to settle on yet, but I think I’m leaning the heaviest on students not being in/having the right frame of mind or not being able to focus.
I thought one of this week's resources, “Why Learn? What We May Really be Teaching Our Students” was interesting. More specifically, the Jack and Jill example in the beginning. This gave me another idea to problematize: Students studying “tricks” or formulas to pass a test instead of actually studying the material they are supposed to be absorbing.
