The “other” means people have a hard time to communicate or interact with others. In other words, the “other” is considerate as an outsider from its community. I had been the “other” in my life. When I moved to the United States from China, everything was new to me. I considered myself as an outsider because of the new environment, language, culture, weather, and places. I had a hard time to understand the world around me. For example, to learn vocabularies, I needed to translate unfamiliar and new vocabularies. I needed to learn how to take a bus to school and make an appointment with doctors. Due to language barriers and the lack of confidence, I was afraid to talk to other people in a new language. It was hard for me to get into people’s topic because I was confused what people are talking about. When I realized that I was the “other,” I tried my best to improve my communication skills and adopt the cultural differences. Now I feel that I am more comfortable to interact with others.
