Role of women in the world most societies are mostly different from the men. The women are considered as less superior than the men and men always gain advantages over women in many societies. Similarly, in two poems of literature name, “My Last Duchess” written by Robert Browning, and “Story of an hour” written by Kate Chopin, authors discussed greatly the role of women. The authors showed that how the women in past had to suffer from gender-based oppression and patriarchal control. These poems are valuable and show the domestic space as a site of vulnerability and violence for the women. Kate tried to picture the oppression of gender biases over the character of women in her poem, and Browning portrayed the demanding nature of men over women and how he likes the power control in the poem.

The short story “The story of an hour” written by Kate Chopin published in Vogue in the year of 1894. The story consists of a theme of independence and self-assertion. The protagonist of the story is Mrs. Mallard who is a heart patient. Her husband Mr. Mallard dies in an accident and the family members of Mrs. Mallard is now trying to tell her the bad news of her husband’s death. The condition of Mrs. Mallard is feeble after she diagnosed with a heart disease and any shock or sudden situation could impact her negatively. Due to her heart condition, no one is ready to tell her the bad news, and then this step is initiated by the sister of Mrs. Mallard who tells her gently the truth. Her reaction is evident after hearing the news of her husband’s death, as she cried a lot in her sister’s arm. When she is tired of crying, she left everyone and goes to her room silently. She sat in front of her window and started looking outside. It is the weather of spring, and the writer wonderfully described the weather. It is drizzling, and there is the smell of rain spread all over the outer part of the house. The amazing weather and its environment are impacting positively on the sadness of Mrs. Mallard. She thinks that how she will spend her life next? She loves her husband, and he loves her too, but now he died and left her alone in the world. Fears, sadness, and grief of her husband’s death are starting to make her feel terrible.

But after a while, she realizes that she is free. She is free from every relationship, and now she could spend her life with her will and able to fulfill her desires. Her sadness and grief disappear after the realization of freedom and independence. She starts to think about the feeling of liberation. She also starts wondering that she might need a long life because she is free now and could live on her own. The feeling of freedom and self-assertion is perfect for her in this situation as she seems a bit relaxed. Mrs. Mallard’s sister starts knocking the door of her room with the fear that the news could get her sister sick. So, she kept asking her sister to open the door. Mrs. Mallard assures her sister that she would not get sick and she should stop worrying about her. At last, she opens the door and came out. Her sister got to relax after assessing her situation. At the same time someone arrives in the room too, it is Mr. Mallard. Everybody goes into the situation of shock after seeing Mr. Mallard alive. He came home safe and sound, and he is the one who safely returned from the accident because he was away from the place of the accident. The writer states, “It was Brently Mallard who entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip-sack and umbrella” (Chopin). But the story again takes a hilarious turn when Mrs. Mallard fell to the floor instantly. She died on the floor at once and did not give anyone chance to understand the situation completely. One side Mr. Mallard arrives, and on the other hand, Mrs. Mallard falls to the floor and dies on the spot. She does not provide anyone a chance to take her up to the hospital. “Later, the medical people who examine her say that she was full of so much happiness that it murdered her” (The Story of an Hour).

This short story consists of many turns and sudden situations. The writer does not allow his audience and readers to sit back and relax. The turns of the story show an hour situation in which the audience never expected the end. The whole events of the story are ends up in just one hour. The writer of the story pictures out the story uniquely. It shows the scenario of the woman who is old having a heart disease and gets the news of her husband’s death. After a while of sadness, she realizes her freedom and liberty which makes her happy and she starts wondering what she should live a long life. But her happiness ends when she sees her husband alive in front of her, and due to her heart disease and end of her happiness about the freedom, she dies on the spot. The story shows that Mrs. Mallard is the woman who needs freedom and independent life, although she loves her husband, her liberty is more important to her. She survives after getting the news of her husband’s death but could not last one minute when she sees him alive, and the thought of ending her liberty takes her life. Mrs. Mallard needs an independent life more than the presence of her husband with her. She dies just because she needs freedom and liberty which she never gets until her husband is alive.

In the story of “My Last Duchess” author wanted to convey the message that how the men want power control over women. The most attractive element of the poem is the style of Duke and his tone of commentary throughout the story of the poem. The Duke in real was a monster, who killed his wife, but he was considered as charming due to his personality and he had a very demanding nature. He wants to control the lives of people especially the women such as his wife. The complete poem is based on excellent monologue presented by the author. The duke was the one who culturally represented himself a role model but on the other side, he was the monster of the moral values. He was the one who did not consider about his moral ugliness and believed that he was the perfect one. He was the one who was culturally controlled by the society and showed that he did nothing wrong in his life.

The first poem by Kate tells the importance of liberty and independence. Some people want independence and self-assertion more than anything else. Like a bird who wants nothing but freedom. In the second poem, the author showed the power control nature of men and how he wants to control and handle the life of women. The Duke was culturally obliged to follow his own norms and want a life in which he controls the power over women. Kate tried to picture the oppression of gender biases over the character of women in her poem, and Browning portrayed the demanding nature of men over women and how he likes the power control in the poem.
