ENGL 1301 Final Exam Choose one of the following prompts and write a well-developed essay (500 -

650 words), using the proper concepts related to the question. Since this is the final,

you may not use the internet or any other outside sources. Failure to comply will result in a zero. Allocate time to brainstorm, draft, revise, and edit your essay

before submitting your final draft. At the bottom of your essay, list which writing prompt you

are answering.

Writing Prompts (Choose one):

A. Write an essay about the political, social, or economic events that you believe have dominated and defined your life (or a stage of your life). Use any other patterns you think are appropriate to explain and illustrate why these events were important to you and how they affected you.

B. You were asked to write a column in North Lake College’s school newspaper about

relationships. Taking a satirical stance, use society’s notions of the perfect mate (male or female) to help shape your definition. What is a perfect mate? What pressures does this image create for a relationship?

C. Exactly what do you think it means to be an American? What does this word connote?

How does your definition support or reject how others may see this term? Explain.

D. Once a month, you volunteer at a local community center. This month, you were assigned to sit in on a suicide support group. While everyone was sharing their story, they asked you to explain what it means to live? How is living different from surviving? To narrate your experience, use any of the extended definition types or any other writing mode that supports your definitions. (Do not explain this from hypothetical terms. Be explicit.)

Targeted Audience: Your class, including your professor (You may use the first person, but do

not overuse it and avoid the second person “you.”)

Structure: Your essay must have an introduction with an explicit thesis statement, fully

developed body paragraphs, and a thoughtful conclusion that answers the “so what” question.
